Tortoise gets an artificial limb from Ace Hardware
An artificial limb was put on a 23 lb African tortoise named Gamera at Washington State University after having its left front leg removed due to an accident. The strange thing is, the new limb didn’t come from a high-tech prosthetics lab, but rather the local ACE Hardware store! A caster wheel, much like you would find on an office chair, was purchased for around $7. Epoxy glue was also purchased at ACE to glue the caster to the tortoise’s shell. This was the first time doctors at WSU had ever performed this procedure, although it has been done previously overseas. Gamera is doing fine and “eating like a little pig”! A full recover is expected. Follow the link below to see video of a similar situation in Brisbane, Australia.
